Commissioned by Yamaha Symphonic Band in 2006. I received a request for "a work to be widely performed as new repertoire for clarinet ensemble," so we considered possibilities for all ensembles in a technical and enigmatic style.
"Nenia" is a phrase coming from the ancient Roman era when a woman of the family sang a song of mourning at a funeral.
This work has a spiritual connection with the clarinet octet "Pater Noster" (Brain Music) composed for Tokai University Takanawadai Senior High School Wind Orchestra in 2005. Please look into, compare and perform both songs if possible. It is not an easy piece but I would like for many to enjoy it.
