The "Pavane" is a processional dance famous in Europe in the 16th century. It is said to be named after the peacock's tail (pavon in Spanish), as women lined up in a row appeared to resemble it (though there are various theories). Together with the "Dance" in the latter half, the piece depicts two earnest and graceful dances.

The melody in the first half is composed of a simple scale: "Do-Si-La-So-Fa-Mi." The key point is how much emotion can be conveyed through this scale. The dance in the second half is a lively 6/8 rhythm, which is more technical. Although there is a momentarily relaxed section, the tempo quickly returns and leads to the finale.

In measure 57, the 4th beat of Part 1 and Part 2 has been lowered to concert G for range considerations. If range is not an issue, feel free to perform both parts with the original concert pitch A.
