The first symphony by Johan de Meij The Lord of the Rings is based on the trilogy of the same name by J.R.R. Tolkien. This book, known in the Netherlands under the title In de ban van de ring, has since its publication in 1955 captivated many millions of readers all over the world. The symphony consists of five separate movements, each of which illustrates a figure or an important episode from the book. The work is composed for a normal wind orchestra, extended with soprano saxophone, flugelhorn and piano. The parts are:I) GANDALF (The Wizard) [ 6'25" ]II) LOTHLORIEN (The Elvenwood) [ 7'40" ]III) GOLLUM (Sméagol) [ 9'40" ]IV) JOURNEY IN THE DARK [ 9'00"]a. The Mines of Moriab. The Bridge of Khazad-DûmV) HOBBITS [ 9'30" ]The symphony had its world premiere on 15 March 1988 in Brussels performed by the Great Harmony Orchestra of the Guides unter der Leitung von Norbert Nozy. In 2001 the version for symphony orchestra, performed by the Rotterdam Philharmonic Orchestra, was premiered. In 1989 Johan de Meij won the prestigious Sudler International Wind Band Composition Competition with The Lord of the Rings. An international jury chose the work from 147 entries. Twelve integral versions of the symphony have already been published on CD, and the parts are available separately.
