Commissioned by Kitakyushu City HS and premiered at ensemble contest in 2018. "Shadow at Dawn" is based on the theme of "shadow," which I have been using for quite some time, following "Hazy Mountain Atmosphere" and "Swell of the Wave", my previous works. The structure remains similar to the previous pieces, incorporating modern methods, echo effects, and the 16th-note swells. However, as a new experiment, I have infused the essence of Arabic music.
At the outset, a shadow emerges in the dimness, and the 16th-note passage begins abruptly. The scenes blend static and dynamic movements. Perform each solo expressively. Play the rhythm of the 16th notes accurately at a fast tempo, maintaining a sense of tension even during rests.
The original composition was an octet, but for this publication, it was rearranged to accommodate a broader range of performers. Additionally, it is possible to perform it compactly as a septet or create a fuller sound as an octet. (Hiroaki Kataoka)
