During the 1866 carnival, on the 6th of February to be exact, Johan Strauss played with his orchestra at the traditional Viennese prom. As was tradition back then, Strauss wrote a composition especially for this occasion and took this to the Viennese Hofburg. The piece was called "Damespende" with which a music critic once wrote: "this new polka Française of Strauss is especially lively". Since then, this polka has been a constant in the repertoire of the Strauss orchestra.
