Review "De Klarinet" (Dutch trade magazine, founded 1998) of May/June 2023.

Spanish clarinettist, arranger and composer Juan A. Pérez from Seville has quite a few compositions to his name. Among other things, he has written arrangements of well-known classical music and film scores for concert band, some for piano and so on, and for saxophone quartet, but by far the most for clarinet quartet. In addition to these arrangements, he also creates compositions. Pérez writes very enjoyable for clarinet quartet. The pieces are solidly constructed and his level is very constant. I have often played arrangements or compositions by him with students and they have always been successful. Partly for this reason, I was delighted to receive these two compositions in the mail. Andante is a sweet, quiet and accessible song. An uncluttered accompaniment topped by a swooning melody. A melody that is somewhat predictable, but no less beautiful for that. The form is clear: A, A1, B, A2. A very fine piece and certainly an appreciated work for level B students.

Allegro Assai begins very cheerfully and is immediately a party. This opening is followed by a more carried intermediate section and then closes again with the party and a coda after it. This piece is suitable for level C clarinettists. Both pieces are pleasantly written and are in fine registers for all parts. Clearly written by a clarinet player. The difficulty level of the four voices is exactly as it usually is for this level: the melody played by the first clarinet (it is also technically the most challenging), the second part also definitely joins in with the melody - alternating or not with the first part - and the third part is lower and colors nicely with it and the bass clarinet is written especially in the lows.

This composition was created with the help of a contribution from the Music Investment Fund, an initiative of Buma/Stemra in cooperation with Voi©e, the Copyright Interests Federation and the Ministry of Education, Culture and Science in the Netherlands.
