Barbaresque For Wind Orchestra

Barbaresque was commissioned by Sendai Jyonan High School and premiered at the 2019 Japan Band Competition. The band had only eleven players including two woodwinds, so it was scored mainly for brass. To prepare for published release, the composer expanded the orchestration to 20 players, making good use of woodwind colors while maintaining the mood of the original score. While the introductory unisons emphasize dynamism and strength, a contemporary-themed, modern and exotic flavor is part and parcel of the piece. In the middle section, detached solo lines appear, followed by a short, elegant waltz. Major themes return to build to an emphatic conclusion.

This piece can be performed by as little as under 20 people.
