Sous 1 jour ouvrableFlute (or Eb Clarinet) | Oboe (or Bb Clarinet) | Bb Clarinet
Commissioned in the summer of 2022 by Ensemble Spinel, a group in Hokkaido, Japan. The piece begins with a clarinet solo in the lightest part, then a slow trio enters into a climax followed by clarinet solo again, and then into a fast-tempo central part.
As the title "Caprice" (= capriccio) suggests, the tune changes several times and repeats on a sudden impulse, but each melody is made from common material related to each other, such as octave leaps, second conjunct motion, zigzag movements including third intervals, and mountain-shaped movements, like "E-F-E-D". When performing, it is important not only to vary tempo and volume, but to change the sound and density for each scene. The accent with tenuto is used in the sense of a "heavy accent," as if the center of gravity is placed on each note.
