Sous 1 jour ouvrableThoinot Arbeau (birth name Jehan Tabourot (1520-1595)) was a priest in Langres, a fortified city in central France. Having been familiar with dances, he wrote a dance textbook called "Orchésographie" in 1589 to teach young people of the time how to socialize.
This instructional book is written in conversational format in which a young man named Capriol learns from Mr. Arbeau. It is worth mentioning that the dance steps and movements correspond to the actual music score and are described in detail using illustrations and the like. This makes it possible to faithfully reproduce dances of the time even in modern times, making it one of the most important historical books. (Various videos of actual dances are available)
The book contains scores for 21 dances, including various styles such as Pavane, Basse Dance, Galliard, Volta, Tourdion, Allemande, and Branle.
This arrangement was commissioned by Hanasaki Tokuharu HS (Tomoko Kawaguchi, director) as a woodwind octet, which I then revised to flexible ensemble.
The following 6 songs are selected from "Orchésographie".
Pavane "Belle que tiens"
Les Bouffons
Pinagay [Branle coupe]
Basse Dance
Branle de Maltha
Branle des Chevaulx
(Makoto Onodera)
