Bb Trumpet 1 | Bb Trumpet 2 | F Horn 1 | F Horn 2 | Trombone 1 | Trombone 2 | Euphonium | Tuba |

The title "Dance Primitives," means "savage dance" in French, and the piece was freely composed, inspired by the word of modern French painter Henri Matisse (1869-1954). Matisse's paintings, especially from the Fauvism period, were influenced by Van Gogh and Gauguin, and his use of primary colors, intense colors, and bold touch is very impressive.

Although the work makes extensive use of irregular time signatures and modern harmony, it is written to deliver a bright and grand performance even with limited technique. Articulating phrases and differentiating roles of melody and accompaniment as well as tones for each scene are key to making colorful and rich performance.

The composition is for brass octet (Trp./Trp./Hrn./Hrn./Trb./Trb./Euph./Tuba), but if there are three trumpet players, the 1st horn part can be played by flugelhorn.

(Parts for flugelhorn are included in the score set.)

(Hayato Hirose)
