This piece was commissioned in 2022 by Mr. Masami Maedomari, conductor of Wind Ensemble Tiramisu, in Okinawa. It was premiered at their annual concert that same year. Since the early days of my career as a composer, this ensemble has taken on many of my works and has always provided warm support. As this piece was also written to commemorate their 20th annual concert, I named it Tiaes, a play on the word "Tiramisu." The music weaves a melody inspired by an imaginary celestial goddess of my own creation.
If I were to describe this work in a single phrase, I would say: a piece overflowing with Kataoka's signature style!
The piece begins with an augmented fourth leap in the clarinet, followed by a rhythmic motif of quarter notes and duplet-triplet patterns played by the full ensemble, both of which play a crucial role in the musical development. The soft passage in the middle section expresses the song of Tiaes through the instruments - please take a moment to listen closely.
In the latter half, as the tempo picks up, dramatic melodies and intricate passages create a sense of motion, driving the piece toward a dynamic and exhilarating ending.
Those familiar with my work might find moments that bring a knowing smile, yet at the same time, I feel this piece also explores new musical dimensions. I am truly delighted as a composer to have been able to bring Tiaes`Prayer into the world - one of my personal favorites.
Lastly, I would like to express my deepest gratitude to all members of Wind Ensemble Tiramisu for the premiere, to Tokai University Wind Ensemble for their subsequent performance, and to everyone who has been involved with this piece.
May you bring this music to life with a performance filled with unity and spirit!
