Sous 1 jour ouvrableConcept of the Arrangement This arrangement intends to make fantastic, beautiful and boisterous music from its namesake. (Mr. Tanaka, the Neagari JHS Band Director says "this piece is like turning over a toy box"). Accordingly, many scenes come one after another (or by bits and pieces sometimes) and various sound effects (pistols, clocks, whips, ratchets, etc.) are used a lot. Each section has a feature, like a soli, but the brass parts are not too strenuous. Some difficult passages have been simplified and are not strictly faithful to the original. Note to the Conductor In the first half of this piece scenes change quickly, and for the latter half, they are quite lengthy. You should take care to balance this presentation and adequately present each scene, keeping in mind the players' endurance. To change scenes effectively, it is important to imagine their appropriate tone color and remain aware of the final goal of each segment. You can use harp instead of piano, in which case, you may omit glissandos. If you use a pistol with gunpowder, you may need permission from the hall (or fire station). Excerpted passages from the original ballet 1. Overture 2. Scene and Grandfather Dance (Act I No.5) 3. Trepak (Act II No.12) During this setting, part of Variation I (for the male dancer) from Pas de deux (Act II No.14) is thrown in. 4. Scene [the battle] (Act I No.7) Also hear the march (Act I No.2) for a moment. 5. Scene [Arrival of Clara and the Prince] (Act II No. 11) 6. Chocolate (Spanish dance) from Divertissement (Act II No.12) 7. Pas de Deux (Act II No.14) 8. Scene [usually entitled either Journey Through the Snow or A Pine Forest in Winter] (Act I No.8) 9. Mother Gigogne and the clowns [also known as "Mother Ginger and her children" or "polichinelles"] from Divertissement (Act II No. 12)
